Estate tax

Taxes imposed on the “privilege” of transferring property by reason of death. Estate tax is most commonly used in reference to the tax imposed by the federal government rather than the state government (although a few states also impose a state estate tax).  At the federal level, gift, estate, and GST taxes have been “merged” into a single tax called the “unified tax.”
